Why is the Jerte cherry one of the best in the world?
The cherry blossom season in the Jerte Valley is one of the most eagerly awaited of the year.
It is well known by many that these cherries, characteristically smaller than other cherries, have a unique and superior flavour. The Valle del Jerte cherry has many varieties of cherries, but the most common are... Did you know that only five of them have the Denomination of Origin seal?
Normally in mid-March or early April each year, the cherry blossom season begins in this valley. Thousands of cherry trees paint the valley's fields with beautiful white blossoms, a tourist attraction for many travellers in search of the prettiest floral scene.
The Jerte cherry is grown in a natural and traditional way. Its harvesting always depends on the optimum time of year: there is no set date. Each year, the season can change its start and keeps many people interested in this delicacy waiting.
Do you want to know some more curiosities?
The main characteristic of the Jerte cherry is that it does not have a stalk: when they are picked, the stalk remains attached to the tree and the cherry keeps the hole sealed.
Cherries have beneficial health properties: they are antioxidants (very effective for good memory), they contain melatonin (which helps you to fall asleep) and they reduce inflammation (ideal for muscle pain).
The Jerte valley has more than two million cherry trees; when the blossom begins, this region celebrates the Cherry Blossom Festival, an event of Tourist Interest on a national level.
